First Annual Holiday Gift-Giving Guide!

IT’S FINALLY HERE!

After much hullabaloo and pitches to friends and friends of friends, Steel City Retro’s First Annual Holiday Gift-Giving Guide has been assembled for your viewing pleasure.

As you know, here at SCR, we love three things: pinup & retro style, saving money, and sharing steals with you, our fabulous readers. The Holiday Gift-Giving Guide has been designed to showcase local small business and artists – that they were within a 45 minute drive from downtown Bethlehem and fairly priced were the only other necessary qualifications! Here, you’ll find a melange of goods and services, from those who’ll walk your dog to those that’ll give you cat eyes & take your pic…and they’re all in your backyard.

Many of the owners sent SCR write-ups themselves (saving the Editor a lot of time…thanks, guys!). These will be in quotation marks. Others were written through information the artists submitted. Please keep in mind: most, if not all, of these businesses have Facebook pages. All you need to do is search for them. Checking in with Facebook pages will help you keep current on where you can find some of these businesses, especially concerning upcoming craft fairs, gallery displays, and tours. Etsy and private links have been provided. Please feel free to message each vendor or our Editor with any questions. We hope you’ll enjoy what you find!

Buttercup Jewelry creator Danielle McLaughlin describes herself as “a crafty night owl.” The Bethlehem resident told SCR: “I started Buttercup Jewelry in 2008 working with repurposed and upcycled materials to create modern and vintage-inspired jewelry, tile pendants, and hair accessories.

I am a huge supporter of everything [related to] Bethlehem and have participated in local events such as Indiemade Craft Market, SAS Black Sunday, Harvest Festival, Veg Fest, and Spring on Fourth!  Over the years I’ve expanded
outside of Bethlehem, doing craft shows across Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey! My jewelry will be showcased at the Baum School of Art as part of their annual Holiday Gallery and Sale  from November 21–December 21,2012.”

Crinoline Shop artist Jaime Shively, probably best-known for her sweet-faced tofu & veggie creations, explained her business to SCR: “I have lived in the Lehigh Valley all my life and am currently in Whitehall where I work out of my home craft studio.  I have been making my creations since 2003 when I taught myself to embroider, hand sew and work with felt, and began selling them at local craft shows soon after. I work solely with felt made from recycled plastic bottles – all my pieces are wool-free and vegan! Custom orders are welcome!”

GO! Tattoo Removal
100 Tomahawk Drive, Kutztown, PA 19530
Phone: 484-648-0048
http://www.gotattooremoval.com

Business Hours:
By appointment only, weekdays, evenings, weekends are all available.

“GO! Tattoo Removal is providing a service that will give options to those who no longer want their tattoos, or those who want them covered up with new artwork.  Our specialty is laser tattoo removal with such a narrow focus, it allows us to strive for the best possible service.  We don’t offer any other typical med-spa type services, and in doing so we’ve excelled at removing tattoos completely, or drastically lightening them so your tattoo artist has a better starting point for a cover up.  Our office is located just 10 minutes west of Allentown and is a professional, yet relaxed atmosphere that you’ll feel comfortable in.

Having a tattoo removed, or lightened so you can have a tattoo artist put new work on you is the primary goal we have, although cost does factor into your decision to start treatments.  Every tattoo and the location of the tattoo is a different situation, and adjustments in pricing may be made at the time of consultation at our discretion (consultations are free). Breaking the trend in laser tattoo removal pricing, GO! Tattoo Removal will not be charging per square inch, or additional costs based on tattoo location.  We do have limits on the overall size per treatment because healing and aftercare are extremely important, this will be covered on a case by case basis during initial consultation.  $250.00 per treatment.

Special:  Through December 31st, 2012 all treatments are $175. If you prepay two or more treatments, each treatment is $150.  If you bring a friend and you both receive treatments, each treatment is $150.  Discounts do not stack.  Up to 10 treatments can be bought in advance. Gift certificates are available.”

Praise for Homesweet Homegrown:

“The best book for learning the skilled resilience of old-school living in the modern world! Homesweet Homegrown teaches the lost art and science of crafting a hand-made life.”— Alexandra Jamieson, author, Vegan Cooking For Dummies and Living Vegan For Dummies

“Homesweet Homegrown is an extremely helpful handbook that reads like a primer of lessons learned from garden-tending grandparents—insightful, informative, and maybe most importantly, honest. (Not to mention, just reading the recipes toward the back of the book made my mouth water in anticipation of the upcoming harvest.)
With this by your side and a bit of good weather, you’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labor soon enough.” —Alexa Fornoff, Assistant Editor, Readymade Magazine

“Homesweet Homegrown has been featured in several magazines, blogs, and sites, including Handpicked Nation, The Utne Reader, Grist, Organic Gardening, Save the Kales TV Show, The Morning Call, Boulder Weekly, The Huffington Post, Prevention Magazine, Food in Jars, and more. The author, Robyn Jasko, is a local foods activist, community garden starter, and co-founder of Grow Indie, a site promoting sustainable lifestyles, homesteading, eating well, and living local. Muero Apparo
MueroApparo.bigcartel.com
Etsy.com/shop/MueroApparo

“Since its origin in December of 2006, Muero Apparo has made its goal to create interesting and exciting screen printed and embroidered clothing and accessories for everyone. From scrap paper to screen print, the designs are always focused on bringing out the style of the artist behind them. Each garment is made to be original and not look like the rest of the pack. Each design is printed in as low as 36 shirts but as high as 60 pieces, but is then never printed again – making each shirt limited and unique. Muero Apparo prints mostly on Organic, Recycled and Sustainable Fabrics to make sure the garment itself is as raw and special as the artwork on them.”

Pet-Sitting by April is a pet-sitting service based in the Lehigh Valley for all animals – domestic, exotic, and livestock – and the peace of mind of their owners! Services are rendered in your own home. This is beneficial for a variety of reasons, including sparing your pet the stress of transportation to a noisy kennel, eliminating extra vaccinations required for boarding, and keeping your pet in an environment they know and love. Pet-Sitting by April can tailor any package to your needs! Because dogs are our most frequent clients, here is a basic list of dog services:

Dog-walking, 1 visit (30-45 mins) – $15

Full day of sitting service, 3 visits (45 mins-1 hr each) – $35

Overnight care (Full day of service into the next morning) – $50

About the owner: April Piazza earned her PA board certification as a veterinary technician in 2007. She has worked with critical care patients in a 24/7 ER facility for the past 2 years, making her an excellent choice for sitting for animals in need of special medical attention. In addition to having her vet nursing certification, April’s experience as a zoo keeper with the Philadelphia Zoo gives her the advantage when caring for small animals, exotics, and livestock. Her personal hobby of English and Country riding and time as a beginners’ horsemanship instructor with the Pocono Equestrian Center give her the benefit of loving and being comfortable around your equine friends. All of these experiences make her stand above other sitters in the area. She has offered her services in the Philadelphia, Chester, and Lehigh Counties for the last 5 years. Pure Sin’s artist/owner, Janelle Hamscher, says she’s been a a “creative catastrophe” all her life.  An almost life-long Lehigh Valley resident, she began her Pure Sin business venture in 2009. Janelle told SCR, “Pure Sin was developed from my love of cupcakes and skulls. The geekiness and nerdiness, plus other neat add-ons, worked its way into my collection [later].”

An avid nature-lover, Janelle’s creations are largely earth-friendly. She uses recycled and up-cycled elements in her creations, including bottlecaps, books, Legos, buttons, and electronics, just to name a few. Janelle’s Pure Sin booth can be caught at the upcoming Secret Art Space Indie Craftfair on Dec. 16th.
